Picasso, Cy Twombly, Georgia O’Keeffe...
Do you wonder where their masterpieces were born?

When one thinks of an artist, one’s mind tends to visualize their most famous artwork. Miki Matsuyama, however, contemplates the space in which their creativity flourished. In the exhibition Behind Closed Door, an intimate look into the artists’ world is explored, which extends to more than their artworks. A space populated with their personalities, tools they used, furnitures they sat on, all of which Matsuyama believes to have subconsciously made imminent strides on the work they produced. Realizing the significant, yet overlooked, role one’s environment tends to play on our creative process, she sees furnitures as serving beyond their ordinary purpose. Questioning our common perspectives, Matsuyama wishes to decompose the creative process from birth to conception; furnitures are deconstructed into simpler objects, and these objects are turned into lines, and lines are turned into artworks. Through this process, the style and techniques of the artists are both challenged yet paid tribute to.

In collaboration with a vintage furniture/lighting shop, CONTOUR, selected furniture pieces will be showcased alongside the artworks. Classic furnitures such as Pierre Jeanneret’s chair, from the 1960’s, will be displayed. The name ‘CONTOUR’ originates from the wish to outline the co-dependency between furniture and lighting within a a space. Just like the meaning behind CONTOUR, the works depicting interior spaces and the furniture pieces will be curated in order to create a contour between object and art, as well as past and present.
